Goldstücker Sanskrit-English Dictionary

aBakta I. Tatpur. m. f. n. ('-ktaH-ktA-ktam) 1 Not worshipping,

undevout; e. g. in the Ṛgv.: BaktamaBaktamavo vyanto ajarA
agnayo vyanto ajarAH; or in the Rudrayāmalatantra: aBa- [Page232-a+ 56]
kteByo'pi putreByo datvA narakamApnuyAt. 2 Detached, not con-
nected with; said by the commentators on Pāṇini of a gram-
matical element which stands part, as it were, of the other
elements of the word, and therefore prevents the application
of rules which would have to take place, if it were Bakta, i. e. if
it were essentially connected with the other elements of the
word; e. g. the Kāśikā on suw VI. 1. 136.: pUMrva DAturupasargeRa
yujyata iti tatra DAtUpasargayoH kAryamantaraNgamiti pUrvaM suwkriyate .
paScAdaqaByAsO . aBaktaSca suqityuktam; or the same on suw VI.
1. 135.: kAtpUrvagrahaRaM suwo'BaktatvajYApanArTam; but Kātyāyana
differs in opinion on this point, for he says: aBakte svare
dozaH ‘if suw were extraneous there would be a flaw in the
application of Pāṇini's rule of accentuation VIII. 1. 28.’;
or the latter Vārtt. applied to āgama tuk VI. 1. 71., or to
āgama muk VII. 2. 82. (Patanjali, however, refutes Kātyā-
yana in this view.)--An aBakta element is in these comm.
therefore opposed as well to a grammatical element which
is pUrvAnta i. e. one added after what precedes, as to an
element parAdi i. e. one which is placed before what follows.
As it is important to know, in the application of Pāṇinis
rules, whether an element is aBakta or not, it will be expedient
to convey the bearing of this term from the following expla-
nation of Patanj. on a Vārtt. to 1. 1. 47.: kiM punarayaM pUrvAntaH .
